Sam Thypin-Bermeo is a senior associate at the firm. Sam’s practice focuses on holding prosecutors and other government officials and entities accountable for civil rights and other violations.

Prior to joining the firm, Sam served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the District of New Jersey.  He joined the Office expecting to prosecute civil rights crimes and gained valuable experience in trial practice, but he left after the Civil Rights Division was disbanded. While there, he participated in ReNew Reentry Court and helped formerly incarcerated people secure housing, employment, and legal services.

Before serving in this role, Sam focused on civil rights both as a solo practitioner and as a Staff Attorney at the Florida Justice Institute. He litigated First Amendment, false arrest, malicious prosecution, excessive force, and conditions of confinement cases.

Earlier in his career, Sam completed clerkships with Judge Guido Calabresi on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, Judge Joseph A. Greenaway, Jr. on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, and Judge Edgardo Ramos in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.

He received his J.D. from Yale Law School, earning the Charles G. Albom Prize for excellence in appellate advocacy and receiving the Yale Public Interest Fellowship to work at the New York Civil Liberties Union.
