Matthew Wasserman joined the firm in 2020. Since joining the firm, he has served as lead counsel for an amicus brief filed in the Second Circuit on behalf of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and secured the compassionate release of a pro bono client. He was also part of the team that won settlements of over $2 million for two wrongfully convicted clients.

Prior to joining the firm, Matt served as a staff attorney at the Office of the Appellate Defender (OAD). At OAD, he briefed and argued direct appeals and post-conviction matters in state trial and appellate courts, including the New York Court of Appeals, New York’s highest court. He successfully vacated the convictions of two clients, obtained favorable rulings in a number of Sex Offender Registration Act hearings, and won sentence reductions for three clients. Matt also clerked for the Honorable Allyne R. Ross of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York and the Honorable Jane B. Stranch of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.

Matt graduated magna cum laude from New York University School of Law, where he was a Root-Tilden-Kern scholar and an Articles Editor for the NYU Law Review. During law school, he participated in the Juvenile Defender and Civil Rights Clinics, and interned at the Orleans Public Defenders and the Southern Center for Human Rights. Before law school, Matt investigated allegations of police misconduct for the NYC Civilian Complaint Review Board. He has a bachelor’s from Reed College and a master’s from the Sorbonne.
